VERMEERS “THE LITTLE STREET” THE INSPIRATION FOR THE ARCHITECTURAL INSTALLATION: SLUM-CHOLET: “MERRY POVERTY”
Nationalism and the Nordic Imagination.
Populist ideology tends to build on an idealized image of a chosen people, which is located in a similarly idealized landscape, that is, a ‘heartland. On imagining and painting landscapes, political, social, economical and emotional feelings are connected in an intricate mesh. Landscapes are complex identities n the process of landscape painting the idealization is a form of nostalgia that generated a dramatic emotion and connects the idealized image with the viewer in the form of a created memory.
Make America great again
Work Title: Portrait of a Swedish traveller. Romanticising history.
Medium, Technique, Material: Oil on canvas
Work Description:
The painting is an original 17 Century portrait, to which a notation has been added. ‘To articulate what is past does not mean to recognize “how it really was’. It means to take control of a memory, as it flashes in a moment of danger’. Donald Trump’s campaign slogan idealized the past in a dangerous way that focused on conjuring unrealistic and occasionally blatantly false images of a shining past, free of fault.
